Dotson's Reading 3

1. We should let the drama in our story have it it happen naturally and that we should pick soundbites that leave lump in our throat. However, they should stick in memory that what a good soundbite should do.  I part that stands out as particularly useful is getting started paragraph. In the paragraph it says that we are not ready to write a story until we can state in one sentence what we want the audience to learn from our report. I believe that its true and that we should have like a sentence that we go by our story. That way we can focus clearly on what we should write about and not had unnecessary stuff.

2. Land of 10,000 Stories: Race for the Cure, aired May 13, 2013

3. In the beginning when the crowd was cheering. When the lady was making a comment there was bell sound in the background. People talking int the background. The laughing in the background when other people are making comments.

4. The wide shot of the people from up top in the beginning. The Low shot when the lady was talking to the people who are running the race. The wide shot of the starting point where people were cheering at they walked past the camera. The tight shot of people's feet as they are walking.

5. Walk to Cure

6. In the story there are parts where their are words in there. For example, there were different times where the story had different ideas about the race and how people where there for different reasons. The story clearly showed that and made it stick in our memories.  There were parts in the story that there were no voice overs and the the actions just happened. When the lady was talking and then another lady said hug your mom time. That happened with the voice overs. In the story there are lot of natural sounds happening. For example, when the crowd are cheering or talking in the background. Also, when they are ringing the bells. There is lots of insistence like that. It catches our attention as a viewer when the crowd is cheering or bell ringing. It makes the story feel real and that makes a good story.

Also they showed a lot the violin bows and him working on it since the focus was on that. The shots of the violin bows were different, some being pictures and other being clip. When I shoot my videos, I will try spread out the shots so that it will go smoothly. I will try have more videos of the topic than the person talking. That way it will not be boring and I should use natural sound. It will make the story more realistic and bring interest to the story. They used natural sound in the video and I thought they used it well.

Make it Memorable Reading 2

One thing I found interesting is that the main reason they do stories to get reaction from the viewers. They have to think about if the viewer will get angry, sad or happy with the news. How the viewers are affect not the people they are doing a story on. Another think I found interesting is that said great is like onion because onions have many layers and great stories should. They should have a good tale on the outside and great images and sound that capture the story. I agree with with Dotson on the part he said about having universal elements. It is true that we should highlight the emotions that interest the broadest group of viewers. That way the story will be watched and people can relate to it too. As a writer I believe it is good to write a good stories that let the readers feeling emotion and the stories should have depth to it. However, I need to improver on letting the reader experience the story not just learn about it like Dotson said.

In the beginning the reporter used defeat the TV remote control. He was describing and making a image of the scene that happened. When Nate and Nick switched. He used little details like how they looked, what one twin had on his arm and how they made the shot. He wrote like how he would converse. For example when he was telling that Nick was gone and Nate was there. He said you guessed it and then told what happened next. He wrote it as he would say it if he were to do on camera. The way he wrote about how they once for fun switch and went to each others class.  He was explaining what happened and used the quotes effectively. Also, he wrote a surprise in the end where all the people from different place gave money to help out. Another surprise was when they got another shot to do the challenge at the youth hockey program.

There is a defeat the TV remote control at the beginning when the reporter was saying the cold outside was making everyone cry. But then he talked about how the cold was not the only thing that made the lady cry. He got more in depth with the story. He talked about how it was her last game watching and cheering on for her kids. The surprise in the story is that she has 12 sons who played football. They are all grown up now and she was watching the last game of her youngest kid. The reporter was talking with the lady, the husband and kids. He was talking with them as he would and asking questions that he would ask normally. There were not gobbledygook and cliches in the story. For example, the would have used football terms in the interview or would have said cliche things like good thing must come to an end. But he didn't and he was good with letting the viewer have better image with the talking to the sons too. That way he get to see her sons and how they are.

Stand Up

1.  What is the lead in this story?  Does it intrigue you to keep watching?
The lead is that something like this would have happened to a quite neighborhood. It is intriguing since I would want to know what happened

2.  What are the 5W's of this story:  Who, What, Where, When, Why
 Thief
Stole things
Inside house
Two weeks
The doggy door was not protected

3.   Give an example of the reporters Voice over or seque (Write it down word for word)
when the lady says that she thought it would be random and the reporter said  it was not and that it happened to others in the neighborhood. Then she talked again.

 4.  When do we see the reporter's stand-up?  Beginning, Middle, or End?
The time we see the reporter. In the middle  of the story.

5.  What is the purpose of this reporter's stand-up?
The reporter takes us to another spot

Move story forward
Reporter becomes B-Roll
Take me to the scene
Use props
Be creative & surprise us

Make It Memorable by Bob Dotson

He writes in a way that draws readers attention. He makes sure that the reader has time to focus and time by using the Rule of Three. He writes the middle of his story first that way he can cut out if he needs to. He makes sure he has good soundbites to write the opening like of a story. He is careful of not wanting to make is writing to long or boring. He get to the information and then cuts how what is unnecessary things. He writes scripts first to write down his thoughts and use that to write his stories. In his stories he does not use easy soundbites. He use one good soundbite to make his story better and unique. He likes to write stories that are not like other reports and he waits to get good information out of the people he needs to write a story about.  However, he makes sure he use strong central characters in his story that way people can relate to them. for example, like not going after the mayor to get a story out of him but one person can give us good thread to hold our story together.

People nearly always answer a question three times. If you give them enough space before asking another question then they will put their thoughts into sharp focus. To get unique soundbites we should try asking the non-question/question. He uses script to write down his story so that we don't throw away thoughts. They will help us with our story and its good to go back to it if we need more information. We should find strong central characters because people can relate to the people not soundbites. The story should not be boring or too easy to find. The story should be interesting and something fresh.

I believe that each column is used to sketch out how the story will be told and what his thought are. That way he can get the story together and figure out what he needs to do to make it better. I think he splits the script like that to give himself to write shots or important things he need to show. The way he writes his scripts his different than others. His scripts very detailed and specific. The way he writes them I believe are interesting because he writes little action before a sentence.

In the story I watched from Rock Center had all the five bullet traits Dotson gives. The first bullet was scene setting. In the begining they had a wide shot of the funeral and pictures to show. They also showed the highway and when the person who was driving stop somewhere. They added natural sound such as church bell and narration by the reporter. The foreshadowing the in story I believe is the very begging shot of the mother in the story talking. She was saying that for a long time good would not leave her in this pain she was in and then they showed the clip of the funeral. The conflict in the story his the law sue, attempted suicide and her marriage. She wanted to kill her self so, she hid pills and try to kill herself. She is depressed and doesn't want to do anything and she argues with her husband a lot. They fight and she feels sorry for him that he has to feel that pain. He got sued because the car involved in the accident was his. Her friends are always with her and they make her do morning exercise like she use to. They watch over her and make sure she doesn't do anything. The character growth is that she realized she can't do anything about what has happened and she should move on. She learned to not be so depressed. The resolution is that now she has a child. She doesn't argue with her husband and she doe not want to commit suicide. She is taking care of her child now and is feeling alright.

WALLDO

Wide- Stop and get that wide shot, set scene. Everything in the shot should be focused.
Angled- making the viewers eyes drawn. Shot people or objects in a angle. They should not be straight on.
Low- Get down low. Bring the camera down on the ground to film them.
Linking- is a pan. Left to right movement. Linking one object to another
Depth- use foreground framing a 3 dimensional. Give them that 3D feel.
Opposite- Action/Reaction. Filming from both sides. Filming from opposite way to give the viewer from another way they would not normal see.

Madison Story

The camera work was good. The shots would be tight, medium and wide for shots to show her playing or being in class. They had talking space and they had the interview shots with third eye. There are lots of medium shots when she is talking and others are talking. The transition from one shot to another goes smoothly. Overall the camera work was very precisest with the story.

The story was very inspiring. They way she doesn't let her arm get in the way of doing what she likes is great to see. She is very positive and nice. She acts the way any other teenager acts and does not let her arm get in the way. The way she sees very thing is in a positive light. She proves that she can do what everyone else can. I really like that about her. It was a great story.

A-Roll is anything in the story that you hear.
Interviews
Reporter Voices Overs
Natural Sound (Nat Sound)

B-Roll is a video footage that compliments the story.
